Chamber Announces 102nd Annual Dinner

The Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the organization’s 102nd Annual Dinner to be held on March 30, 2023 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center sponsored by Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

The Annual Dinner is a community event where business colleagues will come together to honor the Community Leadership Award Recipient and hear from a well-known featured speaker.

Since 1991, the Community Leadership Award has been given annually to the business leader or organization who has most positively impacted the community through their excellence in business leadership and community service over their lifetime.  The major criteria to be considered for the award include (1) giving freely and unselfishly of their time to community activities (2) inspiring others and acting as a role model (3) having a positive impact on the direction and success of an economic development project or community program (4) improving the lives of others and (5) going over and above the expectation of their position or mission in providing community service.

This year, the Chamber will be presenting Donnie Holcomb as the 32nd recipient of the prestigious Community Leadership Award and the featured speaker will be Brad D Smith, President of Marshall University.

Donnie Holcomb is a 1979 Concord graduate who has had a successful career working as a CPA, as a business unit manager, as vice president and president of private companies in the areas of contract mining, automotive dealerships and consulting for natural resources. He has also served as the chief financial officer for a large private coal company and as Manager of Greenway Wealth Management LLC, the company that holds all the trusts for the family of Chris Cline  He has served on various boards, including the Concord University Board of Advisors, is past president of the Beckley Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow and currently serves on the Board of Governors of Marshall University, The Dickenson Group (one of the largest land owners in WV), Beckley/Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce and a Trustee for the Cline Family Foundation.

Most Recently in October 2022 Donnie received the “Philanthropist of the Year” award from Conconrd University: Philanthropy is about more than donating money. A philanthropist is moved to make a meaningful impact and works to facilitate change in any way they can. Donnie certainly fits that definition. In addition to all of his professional accomplishments and volunteer experience, he is one of the most generous people you will ever meet. He is one of the top financial supporters of Concord University—having sponsored many Foundation dinners, contributing to the Race to Resurface the Track campaign, being a major contributor to the President’s House renovation project, supporting the Concord University Gap Fund and Pathways Retention Scholarship and even starting his own scholarship in honor of his family. This past summer Donnie made the first major gift to the new Concord University Ascend Campaign. Donnie is also past president of the Beckley Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served as Campaign Chair in 2018 for the United Way of Southern WV raising nearly $900,000 the largest amount ever raised by the United Way. Donnie continues to make an impact on all the charities in our area as well as having a big heart for anyone in need.

The featured speaker at the Annual Dinner, is Brad D. Smith, who was appointed President of Marshall University in January 2022.

As a proud West Virginian with a passion for leadership and philanthropy, Brad D. Smith is focused on helping facilitate change by developing, supporting and investing in people.

His devotion to giving back to his home state runs deep and he is committed to providing educational and economic development resources to the Appalachian region where many communities have been disproportionately affected by technological and economic change.

During Brad’s 11-year tenure as CEO if Intuit, he was able to transform the company’s business structure from a North American desktop software company to a global cloud-based platform with a portfolio that included TurboTax, Quickbooks and Mint.  The transformation was born from an innovation culture built around data-driven decision-making and rapid experimentation.  The drive to innovate across all layers of the company transformed the way intuit was able to serve its consumers, small businesses and partners.  This led to record growth that nearly doubled the company’s revenues and increased its stock price more than 500% and positioned Intuit as the industry leader.

Under his leadership, the company consistently was recognized as one of the world’s best places to work.  Intuit placed on the Fortune Best Companies to Work For list each year durning his tenure, ranking #13 in the United States and #1 in India, Singapore and Canada in 2017.

In 2016, Brad was ranked among the top CEOs in the United States by Fortune magazine coming in at #6 on their list.

Before his time at Intuit, Brad’s career spanned four industries, including stints at PepsiCo, 7-Up, ADVO and ADP, where he led large, global organizations through turn-around transformation and high-growth environments.

He has served as the executive chairman of the board of Intuit, as chairman of the Nordstrom board and as a board member of Momentive (formerly SurveyMonkey) and Yahoo.  He was recently appointed to the board of directors at Humana.

Brad’s Wing 2 Wing Foundation which he co-founded with his wife Alys, provides increased access and support for education, entrepreneurship mentoring and investment and works to position West Virginia “as a showcase for the nation”.  One of the foundation’s signature initiatives is Ascend West Virginia, the nation’s premier remote workfoce recruitment program.

Originally from Kenova, Brad earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Marshall University and his master’s degree in management from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Brad and Alys are the parents of two grown daughters, Payton Smith and Devon Smith Heyn.

Social Hour for the Chamber’s Annual Dinner is from 5:30pm-6:30pm followed by dinner at 6:30pm.  The Community Leadership Award presentation will begin at 7pm and conclude with a Fireside Chat with Brad Smith.  Tickets for the event are $90 per person and table sponsorships are available.  To reserve, please call Denise at the Chamber of Commerce at 304.252.7328 or email denise@brccc.com.
