In addition to our services, Raleigh General Hospital plays a vital role in the local economy by being the largest single private employer in Raleigh County.  In 2010 we paid nearly 60 million dollars in salaries and benefits.  Along with being the region’s leading healthcare center, we also support our community and our state by paying more than 10 million dollars in taxes annually.  Raleigh General Hospital also provided more than 20 million dollars in uncompensated healthcare services in 2008.

Raleigh County Commission on Aging

For over 30 years, the Raleigh County Commission on Aging (RCCOA) has been providing the services and programs that promote health, wellness, and independent living for seniors throughout Raleigh and surrounding counties.  The RCCOA is a community-based, nonprofit service organization that operates the Raleigh County Senior Center in Beckley and several satellite sites throughout the county.

The RCCOA provides nutrition program that hosts congregate lunches at the Senior Center and three satellite sites that serve the rural areas of Raleigh County, as well as home delivered meals to homebound elderly.

Transportation is also provided by the agency to assist seniors in coming to the Senior Center, going to doctor’s appointments, cancer treatments, the pharmacy, and shopping.

The Senior Center also offers regular, organized activities for seniors to stay active and develop new relationships.  Seniors enjoy weekly bingo and line dancing.  Computer classes and recreational day trips are also available, as well as holiday celebrations.

The RCCOA also provides Health and Wellness services through its Fitness Facility, located inside the Senior Center. With a variety of modern equipment, seniors have the opportunity to get fit and stay healthy whether they are just starting to work out or have made a lifelong commitment to exercise.

Raleigh County Commission on Aging offers onsite adult daycare services.  Adult daycare services are provided for seniors who have cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia or for those who are in need of assistance with everyday activities of daily living (ADLs).  Another care option offered by the RCCOA is in-home care services.  Services are provided by trained paraprofessionals in the individual’s home and offer an alternative to care in a long-term care facility.

The RCCOA also provides public insurance counseling to seniors.  The agency has a State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) counselor available to assist those accessing Medicare benefits.  The SHIP counselor can help seniors apply for prescription drug benefits, remediate medical billing issues, and enroll in other medical insurance programs offered through Medicare.

Other service programs designed to assist family caregivers include an Alzheimer’s Family Support group and Caregiver Classes.  These services assist those in their role as a caregiver understand the needs of their loved one, and how to prevent burnout and fatigue often associated with caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.

The programs provided by the Raleigh County Senior Center are open to all seniors aged 60 and over.  For more information, please contact us at 304-255-1397, or visit us at the Raleigh County Senior Center located at 1614 Kanawha Street in Beckley.  Visit us on facebook at or on the web at
