Welcome Home to Raleigh County West Virginia
“Mountain Roads” Designated Retirement Community
“Almost Heaven”

West Virginia has swiftly become one of the most important retirement destinations in the U.S., thanks in part to its combination of a low crime rate and great natural beauty. Raleigh County and southern West Virginia are among the most attractive of Mountain State communities and are likely to continue to see growth in the two industries which exist hand-in-hand -- tourism and retirement.

Surrounded on all sides by national parks, state parks, and forests, and served by four hospitals and an unrivaled healthcare system, regional developers, in cooperation with the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, are moving quickly toward developing an infrastructure especially attractive to retirees and the region's growing number of visitors.

Spearheaded by the Chamber, you'll see changes taking place that will increase local attraction. Expressways are being completed across the county -- including the Coalfields Expressway, which will open a commercial corridor from southern Beckley into the mountains to the west, and the East Beckley Bypass, which will decrease congestion through eastern Raleigh County.

Other projects to watch for include the improvement of county-wide public transportation programs, the establishment of land management projects, and the further development of tourist and recreational attractions for locals and visitors alike.

Designated Retirement Community Award

Beckley-Raleigh County Awarded Status of Designated Retirement Community

Governor Bob Wise officially designated Beckley-Raleigh County as a "Designated Retirement Community" to be called Mountain Roads Retirement Community.  Beckley-Raleigh County became the third community in West Virginia to be certified.

To become a "designated retirement community," standards had to be met to qualify for the designation.  Being a designated retirement community allows that area to receive retiree attraction requests and gives them the opportunity to share dollars through grant programs to help fund marketing and publicity for the new "designated retirement community."

The certification process included; gaining community wide support from local and state agencies, the business community, organizations and citizens; a community needs assessment; the development of promotional materials; a marketing plan; the development of a group of ambassadors; and organizing an evaluation committee.

Retirement Community Designation is a program of the West Virginia Retiree Attraction Task Force and is approved by: West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services, West Virginia Development Office, West Virginia Division of Tourism, and West Virginia University Center of Aging.

Congratulations to the Chamber Retiree Attraction Committee for their efforts in completing the lengthy application process to obtain this elite status and for giving Beckley-Raleigh County the opportunity to welcome you to Mountain Roads Retirement Community "Almost Heaven"
